The DCYC Youth Sailing program is open to new sailors ages 8- 13 (exceptions considered on a case-by-case basis). While this class is open to new sailors, those children with sailing experience are encouraged to apply because they will have an opportunity to improve their existing sailing proficiency.
Learn the Basics, Improve Existing Skills
The program focuses on developing and/or improving sailing skills, classes are taught in Optimist Prams, O’pen Skiffs and/or Laser Radial.
The youth sailors will perfect the basics of rigging and sailing in straight lines on and off the wind; capsize recovery; identifying points of sail, how to leave and return to a dock, wind direction, and sail trim. They will begin to learn how to start a race and make their way around the race course and the responsibility of caring for the boats and equipment. Experienced youth sailors will receive intermediate or advanced training from one of our coaches.
A Chance to Sail a Keelboat
Sometimes, during the class schedule, the children will have an opportunity to crew on a keelboat with their coaches to learn how it differs from a dinghy; how to tack a jib using winches; how to steer a keelboat on all points of sail; and how to adjust the main and jib sheets for proper sail trim.
This is a four - week program generally run on successive Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Classes are generally formed in the Spring and Fall sailing seasons in North Texas. These are sailing classes during which the primary focus is on learning to sail and/or on improving existing sailing skills. It is different from DCYC’s sensational, summer sailing camps which tend be a balance between summertime fun and a relaxed sailing theme. The DCYC facility is located on the scenic shores of Lake Lewisville in Oak Point, Texas. Your child can apply for these programs on DCYC’s website. Open to DCYC members and non-members.
Please check DCYC’s website www.dcyc.org for Youth Sailing Class 2020 schedule.
Dallas Corinthian Yacht Club has club-owned sailboats available for sailing class students to use. The coach or coaches will be on-the-water providing guidance and safety from a motor-driven chase boat. Our coaches/Instructors are mature, patient, enthusiastic, safety-driven, highly experienced racers/cruisers. Safe boating and safe behavior at the Club is the top priority of all concerned. Our classes are small in order to provide proper instruction to the young sailors. All students must pass DCYC’s swim skills test, and wear an approved PFD (life jacket) always when near the lake.
